Our Living Room Decor Update

Did you catch the before and after on social? After a few years of raising 3 dogs through their puppy days, we decided to give our main living space a little upgrade! I did love our previous room prior to the attacks the dogs made on our rug(s) pillows, throw blankets and couch cushions. Most of the time I did what I could to keep it tidy and somewhat styled for us to enjoy. But the reality was, I couldn’t keep up… with the constant replacing of items as well as moving my favorite pieces daily to safety so they wouldn’t be chewed up while we were gone. I gave up for a bit.

But as of just a few weeks ago, Ryan and I felt like we reached a stage where we didn’t have to worry AS MUCH anymore. There are still days a pillow bites the dust and blankets get dragged outside. But majority of the time the dogs have been peaceful and learned that they should only play with what comes out of their toy basket.

So here we are! These are the after shots (you can see the before here) and we are SO happy with it. Read on for details on everything we used to update our living room.

We were in serious need of what I like to call a grown up coffee table. Something solid. Something that will last and be a piece we keep in our home for a long time. After putting up with a wobbly glass/metal one I am so excited to have this massive and beautiful wood coffee table in our home. We actually decided to extend the couch (details below) so that we could fit this long table in between the chaise extensions. This also comes in a dining table version with is just as gorgeous.

This couch. You sink into it and never want to get out. It is the fluffiest, comfiest place to end our days. With our old couch, we always used to stuggle to fit everyone comfortably. Now everyone (humans + dogs) all have our own “spots” without coming close to each other. Not that we always want our space but when we want to stretch out it’s nice!

I layered our rugs for a few different reasons. Mostly, I love the look and think it adds a little interest. With all of the neutrals in here it can easily start to mesh together visually, so I wanted something to pop under the table. If you hate the feel of jute, but love the look, this is a great compromise. Also… pets and jute don’t always mix. From wear and tear + accidents, I know that the top cream rug is going to be easier to clean than the jute

On the opposite side of the room with our old green chairs, I moved around some furniture that we had here and tried to balance the color a bit. With the addition of such a large couch, I do think it would be nice to find some smaller chairs. It’s all on the verge of feeling cramped. But for now, it works and is probably going to be a great spot to lounge while hosting over the holidays.

The dogs are big fans. We tried for a few hours to keep them off and caved. As much as I wanted to keep it perfect looking, it doesn’t feel like home if we’re tiptoeing around our furniture. To keep things safe from everyday dirt, we do have a few blankets on the cushions for the dogs to lay on. When we have people over (or photoshoots haha) we just toss them in the laundry room and it’s back to looking like new! The covers are also super easy to get off and on so I am not worried at all about laundering these when I need to.

This room is far from done, we will be adding a large accordion door at some point, retiling the fireplace and adding doors to the lower shelves on the built-ins! But if i’ve learned anything from renovating and decorating a home in stages, it’s that you do what you can with what you have. And I think what we’ve created here is an amazingly cozy little nook for us to chill in. We’re all so happy with it.
