How I refresh a room for a new season

First let me start by saying, a refresh does not always mean replacing furniture (and shouldn’t). I look at them more like doing a little swap so that a room feels new and exciting to sit in. That is important to me… working from home means I look at (and work in) these rooms a lot. I want to love them. However, updating them 2-4 times per year can get pricey if you let it. So usually I will update tiny things, like a few throw pillows or a new vase, and then move items around from room to room so even if a piece isn’t new, it feels that way.

Unfortunately, wear happens and we do occasionally have to replace some things. I feel like I am constantly replacing rugs. I guess it’s the cost of having 4 dogs (one of them is still learning rugs are NOT the best place to take care of business).

Anyways, we had a little issue a few weeks ago and there was no saving our last rug, so I ordered this one, a few new pillows, throw blankets, and the room feels brand new to me.

Watch the transformation come to life here!

Here are 10 tips to update your room for the changing seasons:

  1. Add a new (or 2 or 3) pillow to the mix OR grab a few from a different room and do a swap

  2. A new throw blanket can give life to an old couch

  3. Look for seasonal greenery or branches that last a while. I love cutting what I can from our yard. Right now we have some really pretty fig and persimmon branches in our yard. Bonus, this can be totally free

  4. Instead of replacing your main large rug, try layering a smaller one on top. You can find 5x7 rugs for really great deals

  5. Add a new scent to the space, this always helps me transition into a new season!

  6. Switch out art with pieces you have in another room OR order a new print for an old frame to change up colors. You don’t see a lot of art hanging permanently in our house and this is why, I love moving it

  7. Style with books to add color. I like to keep things pretty neutral on the big pieces, but adding a pop with books is my favorite way to brighten things up

  8. Swap your curtains! I love these from Amazon, the brand carries so many styles that are super affordable

  9. Do a deep clean. You’d be surprised what a quick cushion wash can do to brighten a room up

  10. Move or swap out lighting. Create little vignettes in your space with lighting… you can style a reading corner with your favorite chair, a place you wind down with a cocktail under low light, or highlight a new piece of art on the wall.
