decorate with terrariums // diy

like i

mentioned last week

, i always like to do a little sprucing up around the house after the holiday decor comes down. luckily, this time my husband was on board and we spent our time off around the holidays doing a bit of decorating. he loves a nice succulent (as a good husband should), so when he spotted this container while we were coffee table shopping, he asked if i could make a mini terrarium in it! duh. when have i ever turned down a shopping trip to buy succulents and cacti? never.

i ended up making a few with other glass bowls we had, but this one was my favorite container so i wanted to share how you can make one as well in just a few minutes! you'll need 4-5 small succulents, potting soil (they make special soil for succulents and cacti), a terrarium or bowl, moss and a straw (or spoon).

first layer is soil, make sure it's about 2-3 inches thick.

start with your biggest/favorite/spikiest succulent and plant. then build around that one accordingly. make sure you are turning it so it looks good from all sides, especially if it's going on your coffee table like ours! i started with the cactus as that was the hardest to handle, then placed the other 3 succulents around that. i filled in empty spaces with the vine-y/leafier succulent you see next to the cactus. these were perfect because you can break them apart and add as little or as much as needed. top off with a little more soil and use your spoon or straw to pat it down, making it flat and even

dust off any soil from the sides of the glass on the inside as well as the succulents (a paintbrush works great for this too!), then begin to place your moss. i tore very small pieces and tucked them in with the straw.

style and enjoy!

fill a clean spray bottle with filtered water and spray 20-25 times once a week. filtered water won't leave spots on your glass, so no cleaning.. yay! so far ours is going strong and adds a lot of color to our table, i love it.

have you guys ever created a terrarium? share your tips in the comments!
